Application for SOTA

For students interested in applying to the School of the Arts, Singapore (SOTA), the application window typically opens in mid-March and closes in mid-May. Applications are submitted through the Talent Academy (TA) Portal on the SOTA website. SOTA’s selection process has undergone significant changes for 2025:

  • First Round of Selection:
In previous years, applicants were required to submit an "art task"-a specific artwork assigned by SOTA. From 2025, this has been replaced. All applicants must now attend a mass shortlisting activity at the SOTA campus (e.g., May 17, 2025), where their creative abilities are assessed through live drawing tests rather than pre-submitted themed works. This shift emphasizes real-time artistic skill and originality.
  • Subsequent Rounds:
Shortlisted students are then invited to submit a portfolio of artworks (the requirement has been reduced to 5 pieces for 2025) and attend further selection rounds at SOTA, which include additional drawing tests and interviews. These usually take place from late May to June. The outcome of the application is typically released in August.
  • Important Note:
SOTA applications do not count towards the quota of three DSA-Sec choices allowed for MOE secondary schools.

Application for Other MOE Secondary Schools

For DSA at other MOE secondary schools, the application period for 2025 runs from 7 May, 11am to 3 June, 3pm. Students may select up to three schools and apply through the MOE DSA-Sec Portal.

  • Selection Process:
Each school has its own process. Some schools will contact applicants in June to request a portfolio submission, while others require students to proactively check the school’s website for portfolio guidelines.
The selection process typically begins in July and often includes drawing tests and interviews.
  • Portfolio Requirements:
Most schools require a portfolio of 6–10 pieces showing a range of media and techniques. Always follow the specific instructions provided by each school.
  • Outcome Notification:
Students usually receive the outcome of their application between late August and early September.

Accepting an Offer

For students who receive an offer, acceptance is confirmed via the MOE DSA-Sec Portal in October. Successful DSA applicants are expected to commit to the school and participate in its art programme for the full course duration.
